CRANKCASE PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!

I just got a great email from Harmony Castings showing some images of the first pour of the crankcase top casting.

This is the first sample and is now being x-rayed to check for porosity. Once it passes muster for that it will be sent to me.

I'll scan the part using a Romer Arm to make sure the exterior surfaces are within the tolerance range of the CAD model.

If the exterior surfaces are all within spec the next step will be to cut off both deck surfaces to check coolant passages for any signs of core shifting. Unfortunately, this will make the part unusable for anything but a machining test part.

I should get the part next week and start the process. The crankcase lower will be poured sometime next week and then i get to repeat the process.

Until then.

Chris.

  1. Hi Chris,
X-ray can't tell you enough re core shifting? Too bad you can't save enough to make a twin.. ;-)
On the cams; with the cam drives on alternate sides, will one set of cams be running in reverse?
    Great stuff,

  2. Rick,

To see any accurate internal info I'd need several x-rays all taken from known orientations then do careful measuring on the images. I'd rather do direct measurements for the accuracy and confidence level. It was expected so not really an issue.

I am running cams with symmetrical lobes so they can spin in either direction. I tried to get the most direct and low part count for the cam drives. There is room to retrofit a gear drive ala Aprilia but I would rather stay with chains if possible.

    Regards,

    Chris

  3. I want to check out the website for Harmony Castings but my security software has blocked them as a Reported Attack Page! "Attack pages try to install programs that steal private information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system. Some attack pages intentionally distribute harmful software, but many are compromised without the knowledge or permission of their owners."

If you know the folks at Harmony Castings you may want to contact them to let them know that their website is jacked up and they're likely losing business as a result.

  4. Thanks for the heads up. I just emailed them about the goggle warning. I don't get it on my main computer but do get it from my laptop when I checked it. I've been on their site a lot and have not had any issues with spam, viruses or anything else.
